We are excited to announce our Habitat Showcase! On Monday March 6th from 2:10-3:00 we are inviting all adult family members to come and see what their student has learned about habitats and the rainforest! In honor of Dr. Seuss’ birthday, we will celebrate with a Seuss themed dress up day on March 3rd. Students may also bring their favorite Dr. Seuss book to share with their school family. Please make sure their book has their name in it. As always students may choose to pass on dressing up. We look forward to seeing all the Things, Whos, and Cats in their hats. A BIG thank you to everyone that donated food for our staff meeting! I can honestly say it was the best spread we have had all year! Another BIG celebration of the participation in the Book Fair! Our school family raised a lot of money for our school. THANK YOU! Attention! Showcase! We are excited to announce our Habitat Showcase! We are sending home sight word lists for students to practice each week. This is in order to help build reading fluency. In order to move up to the next list students will need to know all 10 words by sight (no sounding out). Other students have been given a reading log to complete 3 times a week. Take a look below at how wonderful if turned out! **Last Minute Dress up Day** TOMORROW, Wednesday, February 15th we are going to be having a special guest come and read to our class in preparation for our classes visit to the book fair. We are encouraging students to dress up as if they were going to camping or do something outdoorsy. Sorry for the late notice this is completely optional so no pressure! Friendship Day! We are going to be celebration Valentine's day as Friendship day on Friday, February 17th. Students are welcome to bring in cards, pencils, or other trinkets for their school family members. We are not allowing candy or food to be passed out. This will be a smaller celebration with only our class. We will have special activities and games to celebrate our wonderful connections! This Sunday, February 12, 2017, there is an African American Read-In at the Leon County Main Library, in Celebration of Black History Month . The afternoon will be filled with various community leaders and volunteers that will be reading from poems, passages, plays, speeches, and children's books by African American Authors. Thanks so much for your generosity! - Tanya Ilangantileke, Class Parent Literacy - Different groups are working on different parts of speech including, nouns, verbs, prefixes, synonyms, antonyms, etc. In writing scientists are continuing to learn how to stretch our their writing to make it more interesting. Artists are focusing on writing conventions, spaces, lowercase letter formation, and proper use of periods. Math - Artists - Scientists are flying through Unit 7, the last unit in the first book! This unit focuses on counting to 120 in different ways as well as place understanding place value of the hundreds, tens, and units place. Theme - We continue to learn more and more about the rain forests. This week we are focusing on an animal that lives on the forest floor. Ask you student what kinds of animals live there! PTA Update:

Scientists have started Unit 6 which focuses on numbers 100-120, counting by 10's, and manipulating the 120 charts. Theme: This week we are learning about the Rainforest's Forest Floor. Groups are also working on a combination of nouns and pronouns, comparing and contrasting, using prior knowledge, and character traits. In writing Artists are working on writing about the Rainforest while focusing on letter formation and conventions. Scientists are learning how to take a small moment and write a detailed and interesting account of the event. Math Update: Both artists and scientists are finishing up Unit 6. Scientists are learning about interpreting data. Artists are starting addition! Theme Update: This week we are learning about food chains and food webs, specifically in the tropical rainforest. Conscious Discipline: This week we are reiterating how to breathe when things get tough. Ask you student to create or teach a new breathing for your family! Message from our Admin: Ride the bus NOW through February 10th to help fund SASC Transportation If you have or ever plan to use our bus system, please consider having your child(ren) ride the bus (morning or afternoon) just once between 1/27 and 2/10. For each child that rides the bus, our school will receive valuable funding from the state. Students must be registered to ride the bus before they are permitted to ride. We depend on state funds to keep our buses running and servicing the many students who rely on the bus system to bring them to school. Our bus schedule can be found HERE. (FTE Surveys provide the Florida Department of Education (FLDOE) with a snapshot of instructional activity including transportation occurring in Florida's public schools and provide the data used to fund schools.) In order to fully celebrate we are asking for some donations for the different activities. Each class will have their own sign up for volunteers and supplies. We are celebrating with all K/1 classes (104 students total) and each student will need 100 of some the items. **FOOD: We have several students with severe allergies to Gluten and Peanuts. All of the items and brands on our list have been checked for safety so please stick to the list. All adult family members are welcome to attend but we are asking that siblings are left at home. Most groups have finished their comprehension quizzes and will be bringing their books home later this week. We are tying our books to our theme Habitats by reading about animals and different habitats around the world. Math: Artists - Addition! Artists are starting addition in Unit 6 this week. Scientists - Unit 6 is all about categorizing data to learn more information. Charts charts charts! Theme: Tropical Rainforests. What are they!? That is the question we are answering this week. Ask your student what makes a tropical rainforest a rainforest. SHOWCASE (Feb. 27th-March 2nd exact date to be decided). Conscious Discipline: We are going over the SafePlace again this week in preparation for the Feeling Buddies curriculum which we will be starting later this semester. The helpful forest jumped right back into the swing of things with a whole new room arrangement! Come peek in one morning to take a look for yourself. We also broke our reading groups up into six groups instead of five in order to have more one on one instruction! Upcoming Dates: Jan. 16th - MLK Day - NO SCHOOL Feb. 3rd - 100th Day of School! March 13th-17th - Spring Break - NO SCHOOL April 14th - The Helpful Forest Hosts FRIDAY SING Literacy: We split our groups into 6 groups instead of just 5! This allows each group to be 3-5 students each. Most groups are working on using visualization and sequencing events as reading and comprehension strategies. The whole class is also focusing on reading with expression and fluency and 'not like a robot!' Math: Artists - We just finished reviewing last semester's vocabulary and will be taking the Unit 5 test on Friday. Scientists - We just finished the last lesson of Unit 5. Homework was sent home as a review for the test on Friday. Unit 5 has been focusing on the equals sign and making 3 addend equations true. Theme: We just kicked off our Habitat science unit. Ask your student what the 3 things an animal needs from it's habitat! In the coming weeks we will be focusing on the Rainforest which we will showcase during the last week of February (Feb. 27th-March 2nd exact date to be decided). Conscious Discipline: Last week the class went back to the beginning and reviewed everyone's main job, Safekeeper! We focused on physical safety and reviewed all of the classroom and school routines. Early Release Days Early Release Days will occur on December 14, 15, and 16. We will spend these three days playing, relaxing, and connecting with our school family. LUNCH is optional on these three days. Some car pickup families choose to eat after dismissal. If you are not sending in a lunch, please let your child know ahead of time so they know what to expect. School lunch will be served to students who qualify and have signed up for free/reduced lunch. TRANSPORTATION choices for Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday must be noted below. 1 - Nutcracker permission slips and funds are due THIS Friday Dec. 2nd before 9:00am. If we do not receive funds then your student will not be able to attend the field trip. Please email me if there is a problem. 2 - Nutcracker Chaperones. Fortunately we were able to add more chaperone tickets to our SASC block. It is still first come first serve in regards to spots. Email me if you would like to get on the Chaperone list and once you get a confirmation email you can send in the $12.00 for the chaperone ticket. I am anticipating that these new spots will be filled up quickly. I will email the whole class when there are no more slots. 3 - Showcase! This Friday from 1:00-1:50 we are inviting all parents, grandparents, family friends to come in and learn about American History. I have sent home the Unit 3 practice test. We will be taking the Unit 3 test of Friday Dec. 2nd. The questions may be a bit confusing but we are encouraging students to solve them in whichever way they choose as long as they can explain and draw a pictures. Artists - Due to an increase in math homework we decided to postpone handwriting homework. Literacy Update: We are buckling down with our Theme projects in preparation for the showcase. Students have been writing facts about their famous American as well as facts about American Symbols. In our read alouds we have started reading Gingerbread man books (those who were with me last year do not fret, you would be surprised at home many different versions I have and did not get to last year). Math: Artists are finishing up Unit 4 and will be taking their test next week. Scientists are finishing up Unit 3 and will take their test this Friday.
